About

Taught by Maestro Mark Shapiro and organized by Daniel Zinn, Fort Greene Conducting Workshop gives emerging and mid-career conductors the opportunity to improve technique by deepening and strengthening the connection between hearing and gesture.

The program is designed to work well with school schedules for participants in New York and elsewhere, offering 40 minutes of conducting time in just 2 days.

From Maestro Mark Shapiro

“In my teaching of conducting, I’m committed to the principle that conducting challenges are fundamentally musical (and sometimes also interpersonal). The path to solving conducting problems and gaining fluency and confidence on the podium always entails, on one hand, a deepening of musical insight and hearing, and on the other hand, a subtle appreciation of other minds. A genuinely reliable, lasting and vital conducting technique can only be built from the inside out. In my workshops, classes and lessons, I work with you to help you coordinate intellect, ear, spirit, heart and body, guiding you to know what you want to be communicating and how you can be most effective at communicating it.”

“Maestro Mark Shapiro’s ear-centric approach to conducting technique is bound to leave a strong impression on you, as it has on me, giving you food for thought for many years to come.”

    Competition

This year, Fort Greene's conducting workshop will feature an exciting competition where the best conductor will be awarded a full scholarship. The winner will be determined by a combined vote: 50% from the orchestra members and 50% from the teacher. At the end of the course, each orchestra member will receive a rating sheet to evaluate conductors based on several parameters. The conductor with the highest overall score will receive the prestigious Fort Greene Orchestra Prize, valued at $1900, and will be added to the roster of assistant conductors of the FGO for the season.
